Update on  the Two Tier Edexcel GCSE Mathematics Specifications  (11/01/2006)

This update is about changes to GCSE mathematics. QCA announced in April 2005 the introduction of two-tier GCSE mathematics for first teaching in 2006 with first award in 2008. Following an independent evaluation of trials that took place during the 2005 summer term, QCA has confirmed that the standard two-tier model will be used in mathematics for first teaching from September 2006. This standard two-tier model has a higher tier covering grades A* - D and a foundation tier covering grades C - G. This is the same model that is used in other subjects, such as science and English. The current three-tier model will be withdrawn from 2006 and the last examination will be June 2007 for foundation, intermediate and higher tiers and November 2007 for intermediate and higher tiers only.

We would like to reassure you that there will be little change to the content studied for GCSE mathematics. The only significant change will be to the format into two tiers of the content and  the assessment. There will also be a re-design of the modular specification to provide an improved modular route. There is no intention of revising other aspects of the specifications. Coursework requirements will not change. New specifications for mathematics will be  made available as soon as possible during spring of 2006.

The Higher tier papers will assess Grades A* – D. The Foundation tier papers will assess Grades C – G. Both tiers will have calculator and non-calculator papers as at present and the format of both linear papers will be largely unchanged.

Once the revised specifications are approved, Edexcel will as usual give every support to teachers, both via face-to-face meetings and materials to aid the teaching, learning and assessment process.

In addition, Edexcel is pleased to announce  publishing partnerships which will give teachers an extensive choice for GCSE Mathematics, both textbooks and electronic support.

By providing everyone with the opportunity, if their work deserves it, to gain a grade C in GCSE mathematics, two-tier GCSE mathematics should be a very positive step towards: inspiring, motivating and encouraging young people; as well as increasing post-16 take up of mathematics qualifications. We are confident that by working closely together with you that we can raise the standard of performance and attainment of GCSE Mathematics for young people.

We will be holding events from late February. More information will be sent to all Heads of Maths within the next week and posted on the website. Please check back here for further updates.
