What are Adult Basic Skills?
There are two different types of Adult Basic Skills - Adult Literacy & Numeracy. If you are have been out of education for a long time and/or want to improve your reading or maths, these may be what you need.
The government has produced national literacy and numeracy standards. They make sure that these courses have the following points:
- Clear targets
- Learner encouragement
- Confirmation of achievement
- Enhanced motivation
There are three levels for each qualification – Entry Level, Level 1 and Level 2.
Adult Literacy has three parts:
- Reading
- Speaking and listening
- Writing
Adult Numeracy has three parts:
- Handling data
- Measure, shape and space
- Number
You do not have to put together a folder of work known as a portfolio. At the end of the course you take tests. Edexcel writes the tests which are sent to your place of study. If you don’t pass after the first time, you can retake as often as you like.
There is no age-restriction on ABS.
