BTEC Sports student selected for England Colleges’ rugby squad

Bridgwater College BTEC student and rugby player Emily Hunter has been selected for the England Colleges' national representative squad.

Emily, a forward from Burnham, is studying for a BTEC First Diploma in Sports.  Fellow student Karen Onions, who lives in Over Stowey, is doing her A levels. Both played for Bridgwater & Albion Rugby Club girls' teams until this season and were members of the Somerset girls' U-17 team who won the South-West title.

The duo have each been presented with a cheque for £100 from Bridgwater College towards the cost of their kit and travel expenses while on international duty.

The college's director of sports academies Jason Gunningham commented: "Both Emily and Karen have worked extremely hard in their club rugby and used the training and fitness programmes within the college's sports academy to achieve their international selection.

"We are very proud of them, as they have combined their academic studies with a full and intensive training and playing schedule and have been very active in trying to encourage and develop the Women's Rugby Enrichment Programme we have started at the College this year."

Both Hunter and Onions have also been selected to represent the South-West in the National British Colleges' Championships in Loughborough at Easter.
