GNVQ Study Options
GNVQ – Foundation and Intermediate Levels
Our General National Vocational Qualifications (GNVQs) have been offered in schools and colleges since 1992. These qualifications are usually available to Post 16 students although some schools offer them at Key Stage 4.
Studying for GNVQs will offer a challenge but there will also be much to enjoy. They involve a wide range of teaching and learning approaches with more practical and assignment work than academic qualifications.
How you will be assessed
Foundation and Intermediate GNVQs each have 6 units, 4 of them have internal assessment (coursework collected in a portfolio which is marked by your teacher and checked by Edexcel) and 2 externally assesed/tested units.
Each unit is graded either Pass, Merit or Distinction and awarded points. The points gained determine the overall result which is also graded Pass, Merit or Distinction.
Equivalence
A 6-unit GNVQ is the equivalent of four GCSEs:
Foundation GNVQ 4 GCSEs D – G
Intermediate GNVQ 4 GCSEs A*– C
Progression options
Most students completing a Foundation GNVQ will consider employment, an NVQ course or possibly an Intermediate GNVQ. A student with an Intermediate GNVQ and two GCSEs grades A* – C may consider employment, NVQ level 2 or 3 or Advanced VCE courses.
