Horticultural high achiever!  ( 09/03/2003)

Edexcel is pleased to announce that Barry Mayled who studies at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff has been awarded a 2002 BTEC Higher National Student Prize.

the HN Prize by Yvonne Johns,
Edexcel Regional Manager, HE

Barry started the HNC Amenity Horticulture course as a mature student after practising architecture in private practice for nearly 30 years.  His decision to retrain was fuelled by his threatened disability as an insulin-dependant diabetic.  This condition is preventing Barry from working at height, which has narrowed his career substantially.  The HNC Amenity Horticulture course, in which he achieved a distinction for all 10 modules, will enable him to offer a garden design service that will complement his current business and allow him to work from home.

The external examiner, John Shaw, commented on the quality of his work, noting that “not only is the design work of an exceptional standard, but the student also submitted scale models for each of the designs”.

Edexcel wishes Barry well in his future career and looks forward to seeing his garden design which will feature at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2003.

The prize is open to BTEC Higher National students at higher education institutions and was awarded by Edexcel for the seventh year in 2002 to over 40 university students.
