Edexcel is in constant communication with stakeholder and sector skills bodies to ensure that our solutions continue to be relevant for our customers.  We hold Employer Forums for the security sector and across sectors with the aims of encouraging good practice and networking opportunities.

The next employer forum will take place on the 27th March 2007 and focus on The Leitch Report: Skills in the UK – the long term challenge for employers.

“Our nation’s skills are not world class and we run the risk that this will undermine the UK’s long term prosperity.” The message in the Leitch Report is when it comes to skills we need to raise our game, “the case for action is compelling and urgent…there is a consensus that we need to be much more ambitious.”

The challenge on employers is huge in accepting shared responsibilities for employee skills and embedding lifelong learning. The targets for employee basic skills achievement (95%) and Level 2 standards (90%) in themselves are daunting.

How do the recommendations impact your organisation? What does shared responsibility actually mean? How do you get the best out of the system, both for your workers and your organisation’s budget? How do you build on what you are doing already?

What practical steps can help you to prepare your organisation and determine the priorities and timescales for action? Find out about leading edge approaches, government support and what industry is actually doing – where does your approach fit it?

Topics include:-

  • Leitch, the likely impact- Exploring key issues from the Leitch Report with Mike Campbell, Director of Strategy and Research, Sector Skills Development Agency.
  • Train to Gain – is your organisation benefiting from the support available? The LSC will help you understand how to access it and discuss how Train to Gain proposes to rise to the challenge of Leitch?
  • Building the Basics – How Wickes approached the long term skill needs of their staff.
  • How are we doing? – informal benchmarking with peers about what’s working or not working for their business
  • Industry think tank – facilitated discussion on key issues raised by attendees
  • Planning to go forward - Strategies and practical applications from Edexcel’s work based learning team
