Qualifications : WorkSkills

WorkSkills and STEM

Edexcel has been working with the Centre for Science Education at Sheffield Hallam University to integrate Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) skills into the WorkSkills suite of BTEC qualifications.

STEM learning and leadership is based on two levels of leadership which progress as the learners develops through life. The aim is to:

  • Increase motivation to learn STEM subjects
  • Improve the chances of  learners applying these skills in the workplace
  • Raise the expectations and aspirations of  learners
  • Give added value to their work in STEM subjects

The STEM pathway within the WorkSkills suite is unique.  It offers learners the opportunity to develop STEM skills alongside personal and leadership capabilities with a focus on fostering and channeling learners’ personal interests in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The units offer engaging and inspiring self-driven opportunities which are intended to develop, test and challenge learners’ leadership capabilities.  The balanced learning programme concentrates on developing their collaborative and thinking skills in STEM as well as enhancing self awareness and a belief in their own abilities.

Practical STEM related experiences with their emphasis on learning through doing, supported by self-improvement coaching and personal skills and qualities development are what make this qualification both exciting and innovative.

The qualifications are available at Level 1 and Level 2 either at Award or Certificate level.

The STEM suite consists of 10 units (5 unit titles available at Level 1 and Level 2, each worth 2 credits):

  • Developing Personal Skills for Leadership
  • Practising Leadership Skills with Others
  • Learning with Colleagues and Other Learners
  • Learning from More Experienced People
  • Communicating Solutions to Others

To enable a BTEC Certificate in WorkSkills (13 credits) to be obtained the learner would need to take an additional 3 credits from the wider WorkSkills framework.
