The aim of the unit is to help the learner understand the different types of alternatives to paid work and how these may be transferable to other areas of their life. The learner will find out how to access information from organisations that provide opportunities, support or advice regarding beneficial alternatives to paid work.
The learner will be expected to:
- Know that there are different types of beneficial activities which are alternatives to paid work
- Know how to access information from organisations involved in beneficial alternatives to paid work
- Know that the skills and qualities gained from participating in alternatives to paid work may be transferable to other areas of life

Working as a Volunteer
GLH: 20 hours
Working as a volunteer can often provide individuals with the opportunity to gain new skills and abilities which are transferable to paid employment. Learners will understand the importance of the voluntary sector by considering the personal skills and qualities required by volunteers for different types of voluntary work. Learners will investigate different kinds of voluntary work and learn how to apply for an area of voluntary work which interests them.
In order to achieve this unit the learner must participate in some form of voluntary work.
The learner will be expected to:
- Know why volunteers are important
- Understand that a variety of personal skills are required for different areas of voluntary work
- Know how to apply to become a volunteer
- Be able to undertake voluntary work

Managing your Own Money
GLH: 10 hours
The ability to manage your own money is an essential life skill. This unit will help the learner to understand ways of earning money. The learner will identify their sources of income and ensure that their outgoings do not exceed these. The unit also considers how money can be saved or invested and looks at the factors involved in choosing an appropriate place to save money.
The learner will be expected to:
- Understand different sources of income and typical types of expenditure
- Know how to balance income and expenditure
- Know different types of savings accounts and how to choose a bank or building society to meet their needs
- Know how to invest and save money for future needs and understand the advantages and disadvantages of this

Being Responsible for Other People’s Money

Learners may be required to have responsibility for other people’s money either in a personal situation or in a professional capacity. The unit will introduce the learner to the importance of handling other people’s money responsibly. They will identify suitable methods of payment and follow procedures for handling and storing money safely.
The learner will be expected to:
- Know different methods of payment and when they could be used
- Understand the importance of handling other people’s money responsibly
- Know procedures that might apply when responsible for other people’s money
- Be able to handle financial transactions responsibly

Searching for a Job
GLH: 10 hours
Searching for a job can be both challenging and time consuming. The learner should be able to identify key areas of interest, know where their strengths and abilities lie and be able to look for appropriate employment opportunities that match these criteria.
The focus of this unit is for the learner to demonstrate their skills in knowing where and how they can most effectively identify potential jobs. The learner will find out how to search for appropriate job roles and job types based on an understanding of their own skills and interests
The learner will be expected to:
- Know potential job sources
- Know potential job roles that are suited to their skills and interests
- Be able to search for job vacancies and understand job advertisements

Applying for a Job

The various methods of applying for a job differ according to the type of information requested and the way in which this is presented. Learners will understand how to apply for a range of job vacancies and look at the importance of presenting job application information in an appropriate and accurate way.
In order to achieve this unit the learner will need to apply for one job.
The learner will be expected to:
- Understand the different methods of applying for a range of job vacancies
- Know how to complete a job application by identifying the relevant information and appropriate way of presenting this information
- Be able to apply for a job using the appropriate application method

Preparing for an Interview

Preparation and planning are vital parts of the interview process. The learner will know how to prepare appropriate responses to the interviewer’s questions and will plan a number of questions to ask the interviewer. The learner will also be aware of the importance of planning travel arrangements in advance to ensure that they arrive on time and in the correct location.
The learner will be expected to:
- Know how to respond to questions that they might be asked at interview
- Be able to prepare appropriate questions to ask the interviewer

Interview Skills

The main purpose of this unit is for learners to acquire the good communication skills needed for a successful interview, whether that be for a job role, work placement or training course. The learner will understand the importance of answering interview questions clearly and appropriately and will know the significance of both verbal and non-verbal communication when presenting themselves to an interviewer.
The learner will be expected to:
- Know how to present themselves appropriately at an interview
- Answer the interviewer’s questions properly
- Evaluate their own performance and understand their own strengths and weaknesses

Self Management Skills

Effective self management leads to increased productivity in the workplace and is a key employability skill. The learner will develop an understanding of the key skills associated with effective self management, including prioritising of time and workloads, setting objectives and taking breaks at appropriate times. The learner will also develop the skills to carry out an evaluation of their performance.
The learner will be expected to:
- Understand how to manage themselves in the workplace
- Demonstrate a range of self management skills
- Complete a review of their self management skills by identifying what went well and what did not

The development of leadership skills is an important aspect of employability. Whether these skills are used formally in a managerial or supervisory role or informally to lead a small group of people or to relay instructions, learners will benefit from knowing how to develop these skills and use them effectively at work. The unit introduces the learner to the concept of effective leadership and encourages them to develop the skills to make basic decisions and give instructions as part of a leadership role.

The learner will find out how to respond appropriately to other people’s views about how effectively they have solved a problem and communicated this solution.

Enterprise activities offer opportunities to develop leadership skills as well as encouraging characterisitcs like tenactiy, independence, creativity, innovativeness and a sense of intuition. Learners taking this unit will develop an understanding of how to set up an enterprise activity that involves selling a product or service and consider the skills needed to do so. Learners will calculate the costs of setting up an enterprise, understand the risks and responsibilities involved and know how to promote the product or service that they are offering.

Being involved in a production activity can help the learner to develop a range of basic entrepreneurial skills.
