BTEC student's designs are fit for two queens  (19/02/2007)

A BTEC HND student at Burton College, studying textiles, has embarked on a live design project with the same company that developed the interior styles of the luxury cruise liners, QE2 and QM2.

Sam Peet, 19, and her fellow BTEC HND textile students at Burton College are working on fabric designs for the interiors of beach huts and tearooms in a botanical garden for Skopos Design.  Skopos has secured one of its biggest ever orders - in excess of $1 million - for the supply of almost 90,000m of fabric for the new luxury Cunard liner, the Queen Mary II.

The project for the Yorkshire company runs for six weeks and includes designing the flooring, walls and furnishings.

College lecturer, Emma Strange said: "It's going to be a very exciting six weeks.
"It is always a great experience to work on a real life design brief and we are very grateful that students have the chance to showcase their design talents.
"The fact that a leading company like Skopos is using our students' talents is a fantastic endorsement of the college's reputation in Textiles and follows a successful collaboration last year." Brian Dickie from Skopos Design said: "I have spent a thoroughly enjoyable day at Burton College and I look forward to a long and successful relationship between us."
