These are nine new GCEs developed in response to QCAs decision for all Awarding Bodies to withdraw their current VCE provision
Edexcel has consulted a wide number of schools, colleges and employers while developing the new qualifications to make sure that they meet your needs

The new GCEs in applied subjects are designed to:

  • provide a broad introduction to a vocational area in an applied context
  • be delivered through work-related contexts
  • allow students to gain an understanding of a vocational sector
  • provide a broad educational basis for further training, higher education, or progression to appropriate employment within a vocational sector
If they are already on the VCE six unit, they can top up for the last time in September 2005 to the VCE 12 unit.
No. If they want to offer this type of opportunity in future, then they must register on the new GCE 6 unit in September 2005, and then top up with the GCE 12 unit in Sept 06.
No. If students want to do  a one year 12 unit course, they would have to use the VCE in Sept 05 because the  first A2 units become available for assessment in 07.
No. It will not be possible to start on one course and convert across to the other. There is no reason for anyone to start a 6 unit VCE this September, which would leave them stranded after next summer. They should all start the GCE. Anyone who has already started the VCE has the opportunity to finish it over the coming year.
QCA has informed us that the current VCE should be withdrawn by all Awarding Bodies with the final summer examinations being held in 2006

Our extensive new portfolio reflects our continuing commitment to this sector.  Edexcel will be offering nine subjects to succeed the current VCE offer:

Single Award (6 units) – 3 & 6 unit qualification available

  • Engineering
  • Leisure Studies
  • Media
  • Performing Arts

Double Award (12 units) – 3, 6 & 12 unit qualification available

  • Art & Design
  • Business
  • Health & Social Care
  • ICT
  • Travel & Tourism
All nine GCEs in applied subjects are available for first teaching from September 2005

We have changed:

  • the modes of assessment, in order to enhance student achievement
  • the units offered for each title, each now taking account of the revised subject criteria and the feedback from centres on the units in the current VCE qualifications
  • the number of titles we offer

After careful consideration, the following titles will not be included in the new GCE portfolio:
