Edexcel has welcomed Ed Balls's comments about work-based training and the rising skill levels of young people in England and the part Edexcel plays in helping the government exceed its key targets.
Jerry Jarvis, Edexcel's managing director, said today:
"BTEC's inclusion on league tables, and the continued recognition it enjoys with employers, further and higher education institutions and students internationally is centred on the 25 years experience BTEC has as an evolving qualification. It meets the demands in a changing working environment and is testament to the hard work of the employers and colleges with whom we work so closely to deliver qualifications fit for the 21st century.
"And the good news is that the 2008 targets look set to be exceeded as BTEC registrations are already up 18% on this time last year. In 2007 Edexcel had over one million registrations for its portfolio of BTECs and work-based learning qualifications. The indications are that more people across the different age ranges are looking for vocational learning in schools, colleges or the workplace, including the modern apprenticeships.
"We will continue to offer a broad portfolio of qualifications which ensure that there is a learning route for everyone, including those who feel that traditional academic qualifications are not for them."
