Edexcel was proud to sponsor the Playworker of the Year Award as part of the 11th CHILDREN’S STARS AWARDS, run by 4Children.
The winner was announced on the 28TH JUNE 2007 at a star studded gala event.
The Playworker of the Year was presented by Edexcel’s Sue Parr and CBBC’s Ayesha to Matthew Tuffs, Holland Moor Primary School, who was judged to be the winner.
Matthew starts his day calling around the neighbourhood collecting targeted children for his walking bus. This is his way of ensuring that the most vulnerable children are not late for their lessons. This type of involvement with the children can be seen throughout the day and the huge range of play activities which take place every evening of the week and are specifically targeted to be inclusive.
Through his work in Skelmersdale, Matthew has transformed lives. Children have had opportunities that they never knew existed. Matthew is very different in his approach to being a playworker because of his commitment to the area, the children and their families. He is creative, imaginative and thoughtful and ensures the widest range of participation in the activities he organises. He also encourages the children to have an active and effective voice.
Sue said: ”Matthew embodies what being a great playworker is. Encouraging children and engaging with them at a young age can make a real difference to how children feel about learning and going to school. Seeing what the barriers to attending are, and coming up with strategies to ensure that they take part is imaginative. The walking bus idea is fun – and healthy too!
Congratulations to Matthew. He is a great role model for playworkers and an inspiration to us all.”
