Edexcel will this summer enable all its GCSE and A level candidates - over a million students - to view their exam results online on the morning of results day from wherever they are in the world.
Through a secure log in process, students can use the online results service, ResultsPlus Direct, from any internet point – home, internet café, school computer or library. Edexcel is seeking the support of schools and colleges to do this, asking them to opt-in to the service between now and the end of term.
Jerry Jarvis, Edexcel’s Managing Director, said: “We are very keen for as many of our centres as possible to participate. The majority of young people are IT literate and expect most things to be available to them at the touch of a button; it was a really popular service with the students in our pilot group last summer.
“ResultsPlus is the first step towards our vision of providing a complete digital learning environment for every student and teacher.”
ResultsPlus Direct is designed to complement the vital support role schools and colleges play on results day. Students will be signposted to further information about their results, what the re-marking and re-sitting process involves, as well as links to emotional advice and guidance services.
Students will be able to see onscreen their overall grade for every Edexcel exam and a Gradeometer which graphically represents how close they were to the nearest grade boundary. The Gradeometer will show students whether they have achieved a high grade in a subject, or if they are only a fraction over the grade boundary.
Colin Everest, Head of Science at West Thames College in Isleworth was involved in the 2006 pilot project. He says: “The best aspect of this, for me, was the Gradeometer, which made it really clear where people had narrowly missed out on a grade and where they had just scraped it without us having to remember lots of data and carry out scribbled calculations.”
One of Colin’s AS level students, Ali Hafeez, said, “I like the new online system. It's easy and it's very detailed.”
According to the Office of National Statistics, around 90 per cent of 16 – 30 year olds use a computer regularly. A survey commissioned prior to last year’s pilot project, revealed that almost 75 per cent of people believed that students should be able to receive their exam results in detail online.
