31/05/2007    Edexcel welcomes Ofsted report highlighting the value of vocational learning in schools

Edexcel has today welcomed the Ofsted report, Key Stage 4 Curriculum: increased flexibility and work-related learning.

Commenting on the report, Jerry Jarvis, Edexcel’s Managing Director, said: “Ofsted’s new report shows that vocational learning has a vital role to play in our schools. The research highlights how vocational courses are re-engaging some school students, improving their confidence, and motivating them to learn.

“We should of course remember that vocational courses can appeal to any student. The report is right to acknowledge that too many people still think vocational learning is for students who struggle academically, but this is not the case. Vocational learning has a practical relevance that can appeal to many learners, combining theory and practice in a way that helps them grasp the subject.”

Speaking about Edexcel’s vocational qualifications, Mr Jarvis said: “Edexcel’s BTEC qualifications have seen dramatic growth in popularity in schools. In 2002, just 200 schools offered BTECs, but this figure grew to 1,400 last year.

“Crucially, BTECs are developed with employers to make them relevant. They are recognised by over 80 professional bodies and attract UCAS points for entry into university, making them an excellent route into a rewarding career or further learning.

“I wholeheartedly agree with the report’s recommendation that schools should be able to offer a broad curriculum, providing school students with choice and meeting the needs of all learners. BTEC is already delivered in many schools around the country and is playing a valuable role in young people’s education.”
