22/11/2007    BTEC students win in Kent

Congratulations to four students from Mid-Kent College who were presented with college awards, sponsored by Edexcel, at an awards ceremony last week.

Principal Stephen Grix congratulated the students as he presented them with certificates, prizes and trophies recognising their accomplishments in the 2006/2007 academic year.

Ashleigh Head, 17, was presented with the Edexcel Outstanding School Partnerships Student Award.  Ashleigh progressed from the Year 11 School Partnership programme to study for her BTEC
First Diploma in Travel and Tourism.

Ashleigh said: “I was really surprised to be nominated but I feel really proud of myself.  I was nervous coming tonight but it was so nice to accept the award in front of my parents.”

Ashleigh’s mother, Clare Head, said: “She struggled in school at first so it is excellent to see her doing so well now.  She’s made us very proud parents tonight and we are really chuffed.”

Caylee Unsworth,18, won the Edexcel Outstanding BTEC First Student Award.  Caylee studied a BTEC First Diploma in Travel & Tourism and exceeded all expectations, achieving the highest grades in her work. 

Kevin King, 20, won the Edexcel Outstanding BTEC Higher National Student Award for consistently challenging himself to improve as a musician and recording engineer.  Kevin studied a Higher National Diploma in Music Practice and often exceed the high standards he set himself. 

Kevin’s tutors felt he had the necessary sense of purpose to succeed in whichever brand of the music and sound industry that he chose, and he has now progressed to a music course at Canterbury Christ Church University.

Lucy Maxwell, 22, won the Edexcel Outstanding BTEC National Student Award.  Lucy is studying a National Diploma in Technical Theatre after successfully completing a Diploma in Musical Theatre and an Award in Stage Make-up won the Edexcel Outstanding BTEC National Student Award.

Lucy received the award because she demonstrated fantastic organisational skills alongside a high level of technical skills in all areas.  Lucy also successfully completed a BTEC National Award in Stage Design.


Stephen Grix, Principal of Mid-Kent College, said: “The ceremony is a wonderful opportunity for the entire college to get together and recognise the outstanding achievements of our students.  It is an inspiring evening, with stories of both academic and also personal success.”
