17/05/2007    Edexcel responds to Select Committee report on the 14 – 19 Diploma

Edexcel has welcomed the Education and Skills Select Committee’s report into the 14 – 19 Diploma, published today (Thursday 17th May).

Commenting on the report, Jerry Jarvis, Edexcel’s Managing Director, said: “The committee’s report is a measured and careful analysis of how preparations for the Diploma are progressing, informed by expert witnesses. We welcome it as a constructive part of the Diploma’s development process.

“We were pleased that the report recognised the contribution to education and skills made by existing qualifications like the BTEC, and welcome the committee’s recommendation that more is done to make clear how they relate to the Diplomas.

“The growth in both uptake and recognition of BTEC qualifications continues to go from strength to strength, and Edexcel will continue to offer them. Over 400,000 students registered for BTECs in 2005/06. Designed with employers and sector skills councils, they are recognised by over 80 professional bodies and, as they attract UCAS points, they are a well recognised route into university.

“As a Diploma Awarding Body, Edexcel has a major stake in the success of the new Diploma qualification and will continue to support the Department for Education and Skills and other partners in delivering it. This is, after all, about giving young people an alternative valuable education experience together with a marketable qualification.”
