22/05/2006    BTEC Sculpture students reconstruct ancient skull

Students working towards their BTEC Higher National Diploma in Sculpture at Stafford College have reconstructed a 700-year-old skull.

Believed to be from a 15th century peasant woman, the skull was discovered in March 2006.  It was found in nearby woodland by two school friends walking their dog.  The BTEC Sculpture students, led by sculptor Adam Wilkinson, were given an unique opportunity to use their expertise to reconstruct the skull and reveal what the woman would have looked like.

Dale Matthews, BTEC student at Stafford College, told Central Television News today: “It was an amazing experience – a perfect opportunity for applying our skills to an unusual situation.”

Adam Wilkinson said: “We began by taking a cast of the skull to protect its integrity and then took a series of detailed measurements to allow us to create a face.  We will probably never know who she was, or how she came to be in the field, but it has been a pleasure getting to know her.”

BTEC Higher National Diploma in Sculpture is one of many art-based BTECs offered by Edexcel, including Graphic Design, Illustration, Fashion, Design Crafts and Fine Art.
