'A' Star Award) with Minister, Jacqui

Thurston; and Tara Symeonides,
who is studying computing at
Cambridge University and was
a speaker at the London event.

Sarah Rogers, from Kings Kerswell, Devon, was a runner-up in the final of the ‘A’ Star Awards. Candidates for the Awards, now in their third year, are based on their marks in ‘A’ Level.  Finalists join others from across the UK and qualify by taking part in a UK tiebreaker final held over the Internet.  It is a major initiative to encourage more girls to take up careers in IT and redress male domination of the industry.  They are organised by Edinburgh-based international IT Service Management software firm,
Axios Systems.

Sarah’s twin sister, Anne Rogers (also an Edexcel candidate), did not qualify for the final, but did so well that she was invited to the London reception to receive a certificate from Jacqui Smith, UK Minister of State for Industry and the Regions and Deputy Minister for Women and Equality.  And another Edexcel IT student, Emily Grainger, was shortlisted.
