Edexcel has launched an innovative qualification, designed with the DfES Surestart Unit, for those in the childcare sector. The Edexcel Level 3 Certificate in Work with Children is aimed at staff, aged 25 and over, who work in an early years or playwork setting at level 3 and have relevant employment experience over the last 5 years.
The introduction of the Daycare Standards introduced in 2001 set minimum standards for training and means that all staff who work with children will be required to have qualifications recognised by OFSTED.
The new Edexcel Certificate in Work with Children is at Level 3 (A level standard). It will use online technology and ‘e-panels’ and a formalised APEL process to capture candidates’ experience and competence. This offers centres a unique and flexible approach to the qualification, enabling them to respond individually to the needs of their candidates. The accreditation of the candidates’ prior experience and learning will be presented to Edexcel electronically, enabling successful candidates to receive certificates within days. If students do not have enough experience to compile an acceptable portfolio, they will be advised to undertake a suitable training programme and increase their experience in the workplace.
Centres wishing to be approved to offer the qualification will be required to attend one of the training events. There are two training events for centres who are interested in delivering the qualification. Centres will receive advice and guidance on the APEL process and key staff roles involved in delivering the qualfication, and there will be an opportunity to examine and assess sample work from the DfES pilot. These events are running in London (11th December) and Birmingham (15th January 2004) .
To book a place on one of these events, please contact Edexcel’s Professional Development & Training team by phone on 0870 240 9800, by fax on 020 7758 5951 or by email at trainingenquiries@edexcel.org.uk. Please note that places are limited.
