We are extremely sorry that results sent to some schools and colleges for some candidates are incorrect for Key Skills tests at levels 1 and 2.
For many it is good news and they have now reached the pass mark. However, for some who have taken the Key Skills IT tests at levels 1 and 2, we have had to change the "pass" notification to "not yet passed" or "within 10%".
We have written to every school concerned and every candidate who has been adversely affected to explain the position to them and to apologise to each of them for this mistake.
What are we doing about IT candidates affected by these changes?
All candidates affected by this change were within 12.5% of passing this particular test. We have automatically entered all candidates affected for a free re-sit in May 2001. In addition we are offering them a free second chance to re-sit.
Why can't we leave the IT passes as they were?
For these qualifications to be respected, everyone has to be confident that standards are being maintained. It is for this reason that we have corrected the error. We realise that this is deeply disappointing for everyone concerned.
How has this happened?
Candidates' tests were marked correctly. We made a mistake when applying the pass level to their results. This is an isolated incident affecting no other tests or qualification and steps have been taken to ensure that this never happens again.
