11/10/2000    BTEC Higher Diploma in the Management of Care Services

The Diploma in the Management of Care Services has been transferred into the Edexcel portfolio from IDeA (the Improvement and Development Agency) and renamed the BTEC Higher Diploma in the Management of Care Services.

It continues to meet the needs of managers in personal and social care settings to the same rigorous standards leads to the award of three certificates: the BTEC Higher Diploma in the Management of Care Services (BTEC Higher Dip MCS); BTEC NVQ level 4 in Management, and the D32 and D33 Training and Development units.

The BTEC Higher Diploma in the Management of Care Services is a level 4 qualification for managers working in a wide range of care settings including domiciliary care, residential care, day centres, primary care services, social education centres, community homes, children's homes, special needs housing and also in the fieldwork settings.

The Diploma bridges the care and management sectors and meets the needs of managers in joint agency services. It enables candidates to achieve qualifications which can help to improve employment and promotion opportunities and increase confidence in and knowledge of the management function. The Diploma provides the opportunity for formal recognition of skills and competence.

It is valued by employers within the care sector because it offers them a range of benefits including improved inspection reports, the ability to benchmark standards with other organisations, improved working relationships, enhanced quality of service from improved procedures, development plans and training, and the broadening of knowledge through networking.

In addition to the level 4 in Management and the two assessor award units, the Diploma incorporates two units from the level 4 Care NVQ which look at the equality and diversity of people and their rights and responsibilities. While these units are not formally assessed, they underpin all the activities that the manager undertakes within the programme.
